U.S. Astronaut of Slovenian Descent Sunita L. Williams Visits Slovenia
Leše pri Tržiču, Slovenia, September 26 - US astronaut of Slovenian descent Sunita L. Williams will visit for the first time the home of her ancestors on Saturday, September 26th. Her mother’s mother, Marija Bohinc, was born in the village of Lese, NW. NASA astronaut of Slovenian-Indian descend Sunita L. Williams attended in Ljubljana the annual Festival of Slovenian Science which started on Tuesday with an address by Prime Minister Borut Pahor. He praised the festival for making the young more aware that science boosted development and quality of life. The main goal of the festival is to encourage the young to work in science and research. Space was one of the main topics of the festival, as well as metrics and natural sciences. Prime Minister Pahor told at the opening that Slovenia joined the European Space Agency in July to enable the cooperation of Slovenian research institutes and companies in space projects. Williams, who last year visited the Slovenian Embassy in Washington and presented the then Ambassador Žbogar a Slovenian flag that she took to space, was a part of the ISS crew for over six months in 2006. Now she is part of NASA’s human resources team tasked with choosing suitable astronaut candidates. |
